Sasaki chose to support this organization because they are joining forces with local partners to host women in the coming year, and our funding helps ensure those placements move forward.Īs a global design firm, Sasaki chose to extend Pride week beyond an in-house celebration because our investment, both financial and emotional, in a global, humanistic practice starts with advocating for greater empathy at our domestic borders. In addition to celebrating Pride with week-long programming in the office, Sasaki invited the greater Boston design community to march alongside Sasaki in the 49 th Annual Pride Parade, and to join us in fundraising for the Santa Fe Dreamer’s Project, an organization that provides legal aid to trans women seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. “Our inclusive culture is designed to give everyone a voice at the table.” “At Sasaki, our diversity is perhaps our greatest asset,” says Sasaki CEO, James Miner when reflecting on how the celebration of Pride week brought the office together. In our second-annual celebration of Pride week, Dugdale wanted to “take the love and acceptance that we have in our own community at Sasaki and spread it out further,” gathering a passionate team of Pride planners around him early to start planning a rich, multifaceted celebration.

The white stripe completes the full sexual spectrum and also symbolises peace and union. In 2018, Sasaki associate and landscape designer, Philip Dugdale, thought to ask, why not hang the Pride flag in the lobby in honor of Pride month? Dugdale’s idea then snowballed into a collaborative week-long celebration of Pride involving movie screenings, an emotional Pecha Kucha about navigating one’s LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, etc.) identity in the professional realm, and rainbow flags dotting all the desks in the office.

The flag now has (from the top) red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet and their closest Pantone® values are 185 C, 1375 C, 101 C, 356 C, 2736 C and 2415 C, respectively. The indigo (#400098) and turquoise (#00C0C0) from the original flag were merged into one blue stripe and hot pink (#FF69B6) was removed. The present day LGBTQ+ Pride Flag has only 6 colors which are placed in equal-sized horizontal stripes. This flag had 8 stripes (from the top) – hot pink, red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, indigo and violet which represented sex, life, healing, sunlight, nature, magic/art, serenity and spirit, respectively. The original flag was designed by Gilbert Baker and was flown for the first time on 25 June 1978 at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade. However, this was soon done away with because of the dark history associated with the symbol – it was used by the German fascist rule of the early 20 th century to segregate homosexuals. Further expansion has led to the inclusion of queer and the community which is now LGBTQ.īefore the LGBTQ rainbow flag came into existence, the community used a pink triangle symbol as their identity. It has been used since the 1990s and replaces the term ‘gay’, which on its own, did not describe the community correctly. LGBT stands for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender.
